Arsenal returned to the summit of European football on Tuesday night after Bukayo Saka’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid and sent the Gunners into the UEFA Champions League final.
Saka struck shortly before half-time at the Emirates Stadium, reacting quickest after Leandro Trossard’s effort was parried, to give Arsenal the narrow victory they needed in the second leg of their semi-final.
The result sealed a 2-1 aggregate win and booked Arsenal’s place in the final for only the second time in the club’s history, and for the first time since 2006.
It was a night defined as much by discipline as attacking quality. Mikel Arteta’s side controlled long spells of the contest but still had to withstand pressure from a typically stubborn Atletico team, who pushed hard in the second half in search of a goal that would have taken the tie deeper.
Atletico threatened through Giuliano Simeone, while Diego Simeone’s side were left frustrated by a penalty appeal that was waved away. Arsenal, however, held firm, with their defensive organization again proving decisive in a campaign built on control, resilience and clean sheets.
Saka’s goal marked another defining moment in his rise from academy graduate to Arsenal’s match-winner on the biggest stage. His composure in front of goal reflected the maturity of a player now central to both club and country.
The victory also gives Arteta’s project its clearest validation yet. After years of rebuilding, Arsenal are now one match away from becoming champions of Europe.
The Gunners will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final, scheduled for May 30 at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.
