Barcelona will begin their pursuit of a third successive La Liga title under growing pressure from a heavily reinforced Real Madrid, an ambitious Atletico Madrid and several clubs entering the 2026/27 campaign under new management.
Hansi Flick’s side remain the team to beat after securing a second consecutive league crown last season. The German has established a disciplined but fluid attacking system, with the arrival of England winger Anthony Gordon from Newcastle expected to give Barcelona greater pace and creativity in wide areas.
Barcelona begin their title defence away to Elche on August 23 before hosting Athletic Club at Camp Nou four days later. Their challenge will be maintaining the consistency that delivered 94 points last season while adjusting to stronger and less predictable rivals.
The biggest threat is likely to come from Real Madrid, where José Mourinho has returned for a second spell as coach. Madrid have reshaped their squad with the additions of Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries and Bernardo Silva as they seek to reclaim control of Spanish football.
Mourinho has described his return as a responsibility bigger than his personal record.
“Words are not enough because this feels like a mission,” he told Real Madrid TV while outlining preparations for the new season.
Dumfries said the new arrivals were determined to deliver silverware.
“We have a great team and a great coach,” the Dutch defender said. “We’re going to fight for our goals.”
Atletico Madrid will also expect to challenge after signing Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand from Sporting. His defensive strength and ability to control midfield could make Atletico more difficult to break down, particularly if they find greater consistency in attack.
Change extends beyond Spain’s three leading clubs. Edin Terzić has replaced Ernesto Valverde at Athletic Club, while Iñigo Pérez has taken charge of Villarreal following Marcelino’s departure. Terzić has pledged to protect Athletic’s identity, while Pérez says he will build on the foundations that helped Villarreal finish third last season.
The return of Racing Santander, Deportivo La Coruña and Málaga adds history and intrigue to the campaign. However, their first task will be survival in a competition where Barcelona offer continuity, Madrid promise reinvention and Atletico remain ready to capitalize on any mistakes.
The title may ultimately be decided not only by who has the strongest squad, but by which club adapts quickest to a season shaped by new players, new coaches and renewed expectations.
