The Premier League title contenders face their first serious tests of the 2026/27 season this weekend, with defending champions Arsenal travelling to Aston Villa while Manchester City, Liverpool and Manchester United look to build early momentum.
Matchday 2 opens on Friday night when Crystal Palace host Manchester City, with both clubs beginning new eras.
Pierre Sage has taken charge at Palace following Oliver Glasner’s departure, while City are adjusting to life under Enzo Maresca after Pep Guardiola’s exit.
Saturday’s action includes Liverpool hosting Nottingham Forest at Anfield, where Andoni Iraola will take charge of his first Premier League home match as Reds manager.
Liverpool are looking to re-establish themselves as title contenders following a disappointing campaign, but Forest arrive with an impressive recent record at Anfield, having won on their previous two visits.
Elsewhere, newly promoted Coventry face Hull, Bournemouth host Everton, while Tottenham welcome Newcastle in one of the weekend’s most intriguing tactical contests.
Roberto De Zerbi is beginning to shape Spurs in his image and insists his focus extends beyond short-term results.

Newcastle are also adjusting to change under Matthias Jaissle following Eddie Howe’s departure.
On Sunday, Chelsea host Brighton, Leeds take on Brentford and Sunderland face Fulham, before Manchester United travel to newly promoted Ipswich.
Ipswich boss Gary O’Neil expects Michael Carrick’s United side to arrive with the mentality of a club under constant pressure to win.
“I expect them to come down and want to give us a real tough game. No mercy, no soft feeling,” O’Neil said.
The weekend concludes with the standout fixture on Monday night as Aston Villa host defending champions Arsenal at Villa Park.
Arsenal enter the campaign as champions for the first time in 22 years, but Mikel Arteta has warned that retaining the title will demand even more.
“We know that it is going to demand something special — and we are going to go for it,” Arteta said. “We know what it’s going to take, we know the difficulty of the task.”
With nine Premier League clubs starting the season under new managers, Matchday 2 could offer the first real indication of how unpredictable the 2026/27 title race may become.
