President William Ruto has accused his political opponents of lacking a development agenda for Kenya, saying the 2027 General Election will be decided by performance rather than tribal alliances, insults and political rhetoric.

Speaking on Tuesday during the second day of his 10-day development tour of the North Rift, Ruto challenged opposition leaders to present concrete plans for the country instead of engaging in divisive politics.

“The 2027 General Election will be defined by what leaders have achieved and the plans they offer voters – not insults, propaganda, name-calling or tribal affiliation,” he said.

The President maintained that Kenyans would judge leaders by their development record and ability to deliver services, insisting that ethnic mobilization would not determine the next election.

Ruto made the remarks as he inspected and commissioned infrastructure projects in Elgeyo-Marakwet and Baringo counties, where the government is investing billions of shillings in roads, electricity, housing and markets.

In Baringo, he inspected the 55-kilometre Kipsaraman-Kinyach road, part of a Sh4.5 billion investment aimed at improving transport and strengthening security in the Kerio Valley.

He announced that the government had allocated Sh22 billion for the construction of 350 kilometres of roads across Baringo County.

“These roads, alongside other interventions, are strengthening security and fostering peace in the region, allowing children to attend school and residents to engage in meaningful economic activities,” Ruto said.

In Elgeyo-Marakwet, the President announced Sh18 billion for 270 kilometres of roads and commissioned the 30-kilometre Kipkundul-Kapyego-Kamelei road, constructed at a cost of Sh2.2 billion.

He also laid the foundation stone for the Sh205 million Kapyego Modern Market, expected to accommodate 200 traders.

On electricity connectivity, Ruto launched projects worth Sh1.6 billion in Elgeyo-Marakwet and Sh1 billion in Baringo.

He further announced Sh15 billion in housing and market investments in Elgeyo-Marakwet, including 3,000 housing units and nine modern markets.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who accompanied the President, said security had been restored in the Kerio Valley, paving the way for economic development.

Meanwhile, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta, accusing him of undermining Ruto’s administration.

The tour comes as political leaders intensify their positioning ahead of the 2027 General Election.
