A sitting Member of the Kitui County Assembly has been arrested in Nairobi over his alleged involvement in a series of mobile phone thefts in the city's Central Business District.
Cyrus Kisavi Musyoka, popularly known as Sonko who represents Ikanga/Kyatune Ward, was arrested by detectives from Kamukunji Police Station following investigations linking him to three separate phone theft incidents reported in August and September 2026.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), detectives acting on intelligence tracked down the MCA along Mfangano Street in the Nairobi CBD, where he was apprehended.
The agency said CCTV footage played a crucial role in the investigations, with detectives identifying Musyoka in connection with the reported incidents.
"CCTV footage proved instrumental in the investigations, with detectives positively identifying him in connection with the reported incidents," the DCI said in a statement on Friday.
The arrest has also brought to light a separate criminal case in which the MCA is reportedly wanted for failing to appear in court.
According to the DCI, Musyoka has an outstanding warrant of arrest in Criminal Case No. 112/303/2024, filed before Makadara Law Courts.
He had previously been charged with stealing and released on bond but allegedly failed to attend subsequent court proceedings, prompting the issuance of the warrant.
The DCI did not disclose the value of the phones allegedly stolen or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the three incidents.
It also remains unclear whether the MCA was acting alone or whether other suspects are being pursued in connection with the reported thefts.
Musyoka remains in police custody as detectives complete the necessary procedures ahead of his arraignment.
"The DCI reiterates that no one is above the law," the agency stated.
"Detectives will continue to pursue leads and bring suspects before the courts to answer to criminal conduct, regardless of their position or status in society."
