Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have agreed to rally behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in the August 10, 2027 General Election.
The two leaders reached the agreement during a meeting at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County on Monday, October 26, as opposition parties stepped up efforts to build a united political front.
The talks focused on strengthening cooperation between WPF and Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), with both leaders pledging to consolidate their political support bases ahead of the polls.
Gachagua confirmed that the discussions centred on opposition unity and the need to agree on a common presidential candidate.
“We are all in agreement that we shall make whatever sacrifices necessary to settle on one presidential candidate to be the captain of our struggle. Consultations continue,” Gachagua said.
The two parties also committed to working with other like-minded political formations to achieve their political objective of making Ruto a one-term president, popularly referred to as WANTAM.
Kitui Senator and Senate Minority Leader Enoch Wambua described the meeting as “a cordial and frank discussion on the future of Kenya.”
Wambua said the leaders were united in their determination to ensure the WANTAM campaign succeeds in the 2027 presidential election.
DCP Secretary General John Methu dismissed suggestions that the meeting required a formal invitation, describing the relationship between Kalonzo and Gachagua as one built on family ties and political cooperation.
He said the two parties were working towards a stronger political organisation and would eventually settle on one presidential flagbearer.
Methu also stressed that the alliance would only accommodate parties genuinely committed to defeating Ruto.
“We don't want partners who say, 'If it's not him, it's Ruto.' That isn't WANTAM,” Methu said.
The Wamunyoro meeting comes amid growing consultations among opposition leaders over who should carry their presidential ticket in 2027.
Gachagua recently hosted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, while some DCP officials have publicly backed Sifuna's presidential ambitions.
The latest agreement signals growing cooperation between Kalonzo and Gachagua, although the opposition has yet to announce its preferred presidential candidate.
