Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo has urged residents of Suna East, Migori County, to take advantage of government programs in education, healthcare and citizen registration, saying the initiatives are central to improving livelihoods and strengthening national development.
Speaking during an engagement with women’s groups and residents in Suna East Constituency, Dr. Omollo said women remain key drivers of economic growth at household and community level.
He commended local women for organizing themselves into groups and taking up income-generating activities, saying their efforts were helping improve family welfare, support children and build more resilient communities.
“Women are at the center of development. When women are empowered economically, families become stronger and communities become more stable,” he said.
The PS said the government would continue supporting programs that create opportunities for women, youth and other groups at the grassroots level.
He also defended the government’s investment in education, saying the sector continues to receive the largest share of the national budget because of its role in securing the country’s future.
According to Dr. Omollo, the recruitment of more than 100,000 teachers in less than three years was a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to expanding access to quality education.
“We do not want any child to miss the opportunity to learn because of a lack of teachers,” he said. “That is why the government continues to invest heavily in education.”
On healthcare, Dr. Omollo urged residents who have not registered under the Social Health Authority to enroll, saying the program was designed to protect families from heavy medical expenses.
He said more than 54 per cent of Migori County residents had already registered under SHA, adding that increased enrollment would allow more households to access affordable healthcare services.
The PS said access to healthcare should not push families into financial hardship, and encouraged residents to use the government-backed scheme to seek timely medical attention.
Dr. Omollo also welcomed recent reforms in national identity card registration, saying the removal of administrative barriers had made it easier for more Kenyans to obtain IDs and access public services.
He said the reforms had opened an opportunity for more citizens, especially young people, to register as voters and participate in democratic processes.
“In Nyanza alone, we have close to one million people who have national identity cards but do not have voter cards,” he said.
He urged residents to work with leaders and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, IEBC, to ensure eligible voters are registered ahead of the next General Election.
Dr. Omollo also linked citizen registration to political participation, saying residents should use their votes to decide the country’s leadership and support continuity in government development programs.
“As we go to the elections next year, we want to work together so that the transformation that has started can continue,” he said.
The PS further reiterated the government’s commitment to improving security and service delivery across the country, noting that peace and stability were necessary for economic growth.
He called on residents to remain united, support development initiatives and work with leaders to advance the socio-economic transformation of Migori County.
The engagement brought together local leaders, women’s groups and residents from across Suna East to discuss development priorities, access to government services and opportunities for community empowerment.
