Police in Nyandarua have opened investigations into an alleged shooting involving East African Legislative Assembly MP Kanini Kega, who claims his vehicle was attacked by armed men he suspects were police officers.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday evening at Kasuku trading centre in Ol Jororok Constituency after Kega left Ol Kalou town, where he had attended the final campaign rally for Democracy for the Citizens Party candidate Sammy Douglas Kamau.
According to preliminary accounts, Kega’s vehicle was allegedly trailed from Ol Kalou before masked gunmen caught up with it at Kasuku, several kilometres away in the neighbouring constituency.
The assailants are said to have opened fire on the vehicle, forcing Kega and his driver to abandon it and escape on foot.
Kega claimed his vehicle had been “sprayed with bullets” by the attackers, whom he alleged could have been police officers.
However, authorities had not confirmed the identity of the gunmen or the circumstances surrounding the shooting by the time of publication.
Police officers visited the scene as investigations began, with detectives expected to examine the damaged vehicle, collect ballistic evidence and review possible surveillance footage from businesses and buildings along the route between Ol Kalou and Kasuku.
Investigators are also expected to establish whether Kega had reported being followed before the attack and whether there were any witnesses who saw the suspected assailants or their vehicle.
There was no immediate independent evidence linking police officers to the alleged attack. Kega’s claim is expected to form part of the investigation as authorities seek to determine the identities and motive of those involved.
The incident came hours after heightened political activity in Ol Kalou ahead of a closely watched electoral contest involving candidates backed by rival political formations.
Kega had participated in the final campaign event for Kamau, who is contesting on a DCP ticket. The alleged attack is likely to intensify scrutiny of security arrangements surrounding political campaigns in the area.
It was not immediately clear whether Kega or his driver sustained any injuries during their escape. Details about where they sought refuge after leaving the vehicle were also not immediately available.
Police are set to record statements from the legislator, his driver and other individuals who attended the campaign rally.
Authorities had not announced any arrests by the time of publication.
