Police have arrested a suspect linked to alleged Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination cheating at Kibabii University in Bungoma County.

The suspect, identified as John Odhiambo Opiyo, was arrested on Monday, November 2, as candidates across the country began sitting their written KCSE examinations.

According to a police source, detectives recovered a mobile phone believed to contain evidence connected to the suspected examination malpractice.

An inventory of the recovered exhibits is being prepared ahead of their booking at Bungoma Police Station.

Police had earlier profiled Opiyo and dispatched a team to Kibabii University after tracing his last known location to the institution on Monday morning.

The operation led to his arrest, with investigators expected to examine the recovered handset as part of their inquiries into the alleged cheating scheme.

The arrest comes amid heightened surveillance of examination malpractice as more than one million candidates sit this year's KCSE examinations.

Police have also flagged suspected examination irregularities in Garissa and Wajir counties.

A police source said the incidents were detected promptly, adding that "appropriate action is being taken."

However, authorities have not disclosed the nature of the incidents or whether additional suspects have been identified.

The 2026 KCSE written examinations began on Monday, with candidates sitting English Paper 1 in the morning and Chemistry Paper 1 in the afternoon.

According to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), the examinations are scheduled to conclude on November 20.

Authorities have warned against examination malpractice, including the sale and distribution of purported examination papers, as efforts to safeguard the credibility of the national examinations intensify.
