The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has linked the murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu to the killing of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, in a major development that has seen a police officer arrested and a firearm recovered.

Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot has been arrested on suspicion of being the gunman who shot Mbobu along Magadi Road in Nairobi on September 9, 2025, the DCI said on Thursday.

Detectives also recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the shooting. Ballistic tests have confirmed the firearm was used in Mbobu’s killing, according to investigators.

The DCI described the recovery as a “significant forensic breakthrough” in the year-long investigation.

Investigators are now pursuing Inspector Kenneth Sang, whom they allege coordinated the operation in liaison with Rose Mbithe Mulwa.

Mbithe is already facing prosecution alongside other suspects over the July 29, 2026 killing of Dr Mutiso in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. Their plea-taking was postponed to September 29 after Wednesday’s court proceedings.

According to the DCI, the Mbobu investigation has now established a link between the two killings. The agency, however, says investigations are continuing to establish the full motive, planning and execution of Mbobu’s murder.

The case also revives a long-running legal dispute involving Mbithe, her former husband Prof David Musyimi Ndetei and Mbobu.

Court records show Mbobu represented Ndetei during matrimonial property proceedings involving Mbithe. During that dispute, Mbithe wrote a letter that Mbobu said defamed him, prompting him to sue her in 2004.

Mbobu won the defamation case in 2005 and was awarded Sh1.5 million in general and aggravated damages. The Court of Appeal later recorded that Mbithe had not appealed against the original judgment.

Dr Mutiso later married Prof Ndetei, placing her within the same wider dispute that investigators are now examining as they seek to establish whether the two killings were connected.

The DCI said Cheruiyot remains in custody pending arraignment, while detectives continue pursuing other suspects and leads in Mbobu’s murder.
