A 45-year-old woman is being held by detectives at Kilimani police station as investigations continue into the death of renowned gynaecologist Dr Job Obwaka.
Police said Beatrice Wangare is being treated as a “person of interest” in the case, as detectives seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the 83-year-old medic.
Kilimani Sub-County Police Commander Patricia Yegon said Wangare was taken in by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and is assisting police with investigations.
“She is being held as a person of interest as investigations continue,” Yegon said.
Dr Obwaka, a veteran gynaecologist and former Nairobi Hospital director, died in Nairobi, weeks after he had been charged in a separate court case linked to alleged falsification of documents in a dispute involving the management of The Nairobi Hospital. He had denied the charges, and the case was still pending at the time of his death.
Police have not disclosed the specific line of inquiry being pursued in relation to Wangare, and have also not indicated whether any charges will be preferred against her.
Detectives are expected to rely on statements from people who were in contact with Dr Obwaka before his death, as well as medical and forensic findings, to guide the next phase of the investigation.
The death of Dr Obwaka has drawn public attention because of his long career in the medical profession and his recent legal troubles linked to the leadership wrangles at The Nairobi Hospital.
Police have urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue.
Wangare remains in custody at Kilimani as officers prepare a file that will determine whether the matter will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further action.
