A lawyer was injured on Monday during a tense attempt by directors of Gatoto Integrated Community School to regain control of the institution following a court directive transferring its management from the government back to private community hands.
Collins Kirui, an associate of Senior Counsel Kanjama, was allegedly attacked at the school after a group of people barricaded roads leading to the institution and blocked the directors from accessing the premises.
The directors said Ministry of Education officials were present during Monday’s attempted handover, unlike last week when they were reportedly absent, but claimed the exercise could not proceed because of the hostile environment.
Gideon Klei, one of the school directors, accused local administrators of failing to facilitate a peaceful transition.
“There appeared to be no willingness from the local administration to ensure a smooth takeover. Our lawyer was attacked in front of police officers,” Klei alleged.
He further claimed that stones had been used to block access roads to the school, leaving the directors unable to enter the premises.
The directors are expected back in court on Tuesday, where they will seek further directions on the dispute.
They are also calling on the Ministry of Education to return the school’s registration documents, saying they are prepared to make their own arrangements to regain access to the institution.
The group has also raised concerns over what it described as intimidation following the arrest of another director over the weekend.
They alleged that the charges against him were fabricated, a claim that could not immediately be independently verified.
The directors said they will await the court’s directions on Tuesday as the dispute over the management and control of Gatoto Integrated Community School continues.
