President William Ruto has sworn in Justice Mohammed Abdullahi Warsame as a judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya.
Justice Warsame becomes the 14th judge to serve in the country’s apex court following the ceremony held at State House, Nairobi, on Thursday.
President Ruto congratulated him on the appointment, saying his experience, wisdom and integrity would be critical in strengthening the court’s role in Kenya’s constitutional democracy.
“As you join your six colleagues on the Bench, you now assume the solemn responsibility of preserving the court’s distinguished institutional heritage, enriching the development of its jurisprudence, and fortifying the foundations of justice upon which our constitutional order rests,” Ruto said.
The president said the Supreme Court remains the ultimate guardian of the constitution and the final arbiter of Kenya’s most significant legal and constitutional questions.
He noted that over the past 15 years, the court had remained firm in upholding the constitution, protecting the sovereignty of the people and defending the independence of the Judiciary.
“I am pleased to note that, over the past 15 years, the court has remained steadfast in the discharge of its solemn mandate,” he said.
During the ceremony, President Ruto also conferred the rank of Senior Counsel on senior advocates Evans Thiga Gaturu and Jedidah Wakonyo Waruhiu.
“This distinction represents the highest recognition within the legal profession and is reserved for advocates whose careers exemplify excellence, learning, integrity, and distinguished service to the law,” he said.
Ruto urged the new Senior Counsel to maintain high standards of legal practice, mentor younger advocates and contribute to the development of the law.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Chief Justice Martha Koome attended the ceremony.
