ODM party leader Dr. Oburu Oginga was absent from the official handover of the Raila Odinga mausoleum in Bondo, Siaya County, as he continues to recover from an illness.

Oburu, Raila’s elder brother, has in recent days limited his public engagements, with his family and party saying he is recuperating well.

In a message read during the ceremony by his son, Jaoko Oburu, the veteran politician said he had been advised to restrict his movements but was closely following the proceedings.

“I have been advised to limit my movements, but I am following the events with keen interest,” Oburu said.

Jaoko also read his father’s tribute to Raila during the event, which brought together family members, political leaders and supporters.

In his statement, Oburu also praised the political cooperation between ODM and President William Ruto’s UDA party, saying the arrangement had helped stabilize the country and support development.

“Through the broad-based government, we are witnessing fruits. It has stabilized the country and we are seeing development projects across the country,” he said.

Raila Odinga Junior also acknowledged his uncle’s absence, telling those gathered that Oburu had been unable to attend the ceremony.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s widow, Ida Odinga, similarly conveyed Oburu’s apologies and asked Kenyans to continue praying for his recovery.

“We will continue praying for him so that soon he will be with us,” Ida said.

She reflected on the bond within the Odinga family, saying they had remained united despite going through different seasons together.

“We have celebrated together, mourned and disagreed through all these seasons, but remained united,” she said.

Oburu’s absence was notable given his close relationship with his late brother and his prominent role within the family and ODM.

The mausoleum handover in Bondo was part of events honouring Raila’s political legacy and his contribution to Kenya’s democratic and political history.
