Eight people have been confirmed dead and 26 others critically injured following a tragic road accident involving a Rembo Shuttle bus, a truck, two private vehicles and a motorcycle at the ACK area in Salama along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

The accident occurred at around 11:30 PM, according to initial reports confirmed by the Kenya Red Cross. Emergency response teams were deployed to the scene, where rescue operations continued late into the night amid heavy traffic along the busy highway.

Seven people reportedly died on the spot, while an eighth victim succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. The injured were evacuated to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital for urgent medical attention.

The cause of the crash had not been immediately established by the time of reporting. However, the multiple-vehicle collision caused major disruption along the highway, with motorists reporting heavy traffic near the accident scene as emergency teams worked to rescue victims and clear the road.

The Mombasa Nairobi Highway is one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors, serving passenger vehicles, long-distance buses, trucks and motorcycles. Night travel along the route has often raised safety concerns, particularly due to speeding, poor visibility, fatigue among drivers and heavy movement of cargo trucks.

Authorities are expected to launch investigations into the circumstances that led to the crash, including whether speeding, dangerous overtaking, mechanical failure or driver fatigue may have played a role.

The latest incident adds to growing concern over the rising number of fatal road accidents reported on major highways across the country. Road safety agencies have repeatedly urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during night travel and along high-risk sections of major roads.

The National Police Service and relevant transport authorities are expected to issue further details once rescue operations are complete and families of the victims have been notified.

Emergency teams have also urged motorists using the Salama section of the highway to approach the area with caution and follow traffic directions as response efforts continue.

The identities of those who died had not been released by the time of publication.
