Arsenal and Chelsea will renew their London rivalry on Sunday when the two Premier League heavyweights meet at 5.30pm in the standout fixture of Matchday 3.

The Super Sunday clash is expected to test both sides tactically and emotionally, with Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insisting players will need to understand the significance of the occasion as the contest unfolds.

“You have to play the occasion in certain duels and the way they propose the game as well,” Arteta said, stressing the need for his players to recognize and respond to different phases of the match.

The derby headlines a busy weekend as the Premier League returns with title contenders facing early tests and several reshaped sides looking to build momentum.

Action begins on Friday night when Ipswich host Liverpool at Portman Road from 9pm.

Ipswich boss Gary O’Neil is expecting a difficult test against Andoni Iraola’s side but believes the home atmosphere could give his team an edge.

O’Neil described Iraola as “excellent, coaching wise and the way he sets his team up”, before adding: “Our fans will be up for it on a Friday night.”

Saturday’s programme opens with Newcastle United against Bournemouth at 1.30pm, followed by a packed 4pm schedule.

Brentford face Sunderland, Nottingham host Tottenham, Manchester City welcome Coventry, Fulham take on Crystal Palace, while Brighton meet Leeds.

Manchester City will be expected to impose themselves against Coventry, although the visitors will be hoping to frustrate Enzo Maresca’s side.

Tottenham’s trip to Nottingham could also prove tricky, while Brighton against Leeds promises a high-energy contest between two teams comfortable playing on the front foot.

Hull host Aston Villa at 6.30pm to complete Saturday’s fixtures.

Sunday begins with Everton welcoming Manchester United at 3pm.

Everton manager David Moyes has warned his players about United’s attacking threat.

“They've got so many talented players who are so good at what they do,” Moyes said. “These players have to be given more attention.”

Moyes, who previously managed United, added: “I've always enjoyed playing against Manchester United.”

The weekend then builds towards Arsenal versus Chelsea, with the London derby providing a fitting finale to a Matchday 3 schedule packed with rivalry, pressure and early-season intrigue.
