People’s Party leader Ndindi Nyoro has called on opposition leaders to unite behind a single presidential candidate in 2027, saying divisions could undermine efforts to unseat President William Ruto.
Speaking in Wote, Makueni County, Nyoro said the opposition must put aside individual political interests and build a common front capable of mounting a credible challenge against Ruto.
“Our position as the People’s Party is that the opposition must remain united. We must work together and ultimately have one presidential candidate,” Nyoro said.
He said the People’s Party was already engaging other opposition leaders and political formations, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, as part of efforts to build a broader coalition ahead of the election.
Nyoro, however, said the opposition should offer more than a campaign to remove Ruto from office, arguing that Kenyans need a clear alternative agenda focused on the economy, jobs, education and healthcare.
“The goal cannot just be changing leaders. It must be about changing the lives of Kenyans and transforming the country,” he said.
Nyoro maintained that his push to make Ruto a one-term president remained unchanged and said he would continue touring the country to sell his party’s agenda.
On education, he pledged to introduce free secondary school education from January 2028 if his political formation takes power.
He also raised concerns over the cost of healthcare, saying many families are struggling to meet medical bills, including the cost of seeking specialised treatment abroad.
Nyoro proposed redirecting Sh40 billion from NSSF towards improving healthcare services, alongside other reforms aimed at making treatment more affordable.
On unemployment, he called for increased investment in industrialisation, manufacturing and tourism, saying the sectors could create up to three million jobs for young Kenyans.
“We have to create an environment where industries can grow, investors can put their money into the country and young people can find meaningful employment,” he said.
Nyoro also raised concerns over Kenya’s public debt, which he put at Sh13.5 trillion, saying the burden was constraining economic growth and limiting the government’s ability to respond to citizens’ needs.
He accused the government of frustrating some investors and called for policies that protect businesses and encourage investment.
Nyoro also criticised Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, accusing him of concentrating on attacking political rivals instead of serving his constituents. Cherargei did not immediately respond to the claims.
He further condemned violence and the use of goons during political meetings, saying the government must protect citizens and guarantee peaceful political engagement.
Nyoro said the opposition’s strategy for 2027 should be anchored on unity, a single presidential candidate and a common development agenda that offers voters a credible alternative to the Ruto administration.
